I don’t care that it’s made by the same company, I don’t care that in most parts of the world Acura doesn’t actually exist, making this technically accurate. It doesn’t matter. If I throw GMC badges on, my truck doesn’t automatically become a Canyon. Or perhaps more fittingly for this situation since afaik there was never a Honda version of this PARTICULAR Acura, Izuzu badges won’t turn it into an I530.

I still don’t get it. I guess to look different? I work with a guy who has this exact car and did just this. And then he kept splattering stickers all over it in just organized enough of a fashion to not be completely vomit inducing, but not clean enough in execution to befit someone on the back-9 of their 30's.

Were it not for the 25 year rule one could just import an Accord Euro R and have the mad tyte JDM rebadge already done.

I’m OK with stickers, even though I might still make fun of them depending on what they are. This is just... weird. I can SORT OF see badging a Civic as whatever Acura it was sold as, but I can’t see having an Acura and wanting to badge it as a Honda.

But the Honda/Acura thing... You take something with a bit of class to it, and turn it into something common. Why?

Still not quite the same. The examples you’re talking about two brands that are targeting basically the same class, but one is available here and the other isn’t. With Honda/Acura you are talking about a situation where two brands are available in NA, but one is positioned above the other. Someone else mentioned that that particular Acura is an EDM Accord, so it begins to make a little more sense, but in the eyes of your average North American what you’ve done is say “I bought an Acura but I’d rather have people think I bought a Honda”.

Because the TSX and Accord are the exact same car and because edm, yo. Why not? There are more stupid things, like converting Euro spec cars into usdm spec. That used to be and still is a thing in Europe.

Because North Americans tend to not know Europe exists. Likewise Acura only exists here, and it’s as a brand positioned above Honda. So to most people who don’t know that it’s a EDM Accord (myself included—this turned out not to just be a shitpost, I learned something today) it becomes a perceived downgrade.

The bigger issue here is when Acura is positioned above Honda, and you change that badge to a Honda badge, it to your average guy it’s a perceived downgrade even though it’s still just a Honda.

I mean, do what you want, it’s your car. But I still don’t get it

I put the JDM name badges on my cars: my IS300 had “Altezza”, my xB has “bB” and my Mazdaspeed 3 has “Axela”, BUT I’ve never swapped the brand on it.

It just looks a bit different, and helps show you know more about your car than the average owner.

But it is a Honda. In Europe, it’s badged and sold as a Honda. In Japan it’s badged and sold as a Honda. Until recently Acura only existed in North America. Does having a H on the steering wheel,as well as the front and rear of the car car as opposed to an A make it less luxurious?

If anything, I’d see sticking an Acura badge on a Civic as far more of an offense than this.

Lets break this down. Again.

In North America, this vehicle was only available as an Acura.

In North America, Acura as a brand is positioned by its parent company of Honda as being a more upmarket option.

Most people wouldn’t have a clue about foreign markets. Or care.

Thus, this goes from being perceived as one rung higher than a Honda to being perceived in one of two ways, neither of them good:

- Non-car people see a Honda, rather than it’s slightly-more-luxurious sibling.

- Car people see an Acura with a wannabe driving it and wonder what other stuff they’ve mucked about with on it.

So no, whether there’s an H or an A on the wheel doesn’t make it more or less luxurious. You can (could?) get a stripper Acura or a loaded Honda. They overlap. But in the eyes of most, having the A makes it the more desirable product of the two. Why would you make that percieved downgrade?

As far as sticking an Acura badge on a Civic goes, I don’t really care. Go nuts. It’s a joke. Car guys will know, and non car guys probably won’t notice, but if they do you might impress them and laugh at them later.

So your whole issue is that you’re concerned with non-car people’s perception of the luxioriousness of the car based on whether it has an A or an H on it. Got it.

That’s essentially the same thing as the whole “I’d rather drive a cheap, bottom of the rung 3 series for 40 grand than a far superior, lesser priced vehicle because it doesn’t have the BMW emblem on it.”

I’m not really too bothered, it’s their vehicle and they can do what they want, I just_don’t_understand. It’s hard to put in words exactly what I mean. It’s not all the loss of status, it’s not all that the badge doesn’t belong here, it’s a combination of both those things, several others I find impossible to put in text, and a lack of understanding WHY.

But you’ve summed it up as close as I think is possible.
